The Harley Street Clinic Children’s Hospital is now expanding the paediatric services it offers to our patients, with the introduction of a new dedicated four bedded Paediatric Bone Marrow Transplant unit (PBMT). This exciting new unit will treat a variety of malignant and non-malignant haematology conditions in children and young people requiring blood and marrow transplantation, as well as providing autologous transplantation for specific oncology disorders.

This is an exceptional opportunity to work closely with world-leading paediatric haematology consultants, whilst receiving ongoing support from our in-house training and development team, allowing you to provide a seamless world-class service to children and their families.

The unit will be supported by HCA’s Sarah Cannon Research Institute and will also be working towards obtaining JACIE accreditation.

Job Description

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that the Haemopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Programme, including the Adult Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at London Bridge Hospital and the Paediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at The Harley Street Clinic meet Join Accreditation Committee of the International Society for Cellular Therapy (ISCT) and the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) standards (JACIE) in their entirety and in particular in respect of quality management (QM).  The services are also licensed by the Human Tissue Authority which requires similar quality systems to be in place. 

The post holder will lead the process of achieving accreditation with JACIE and meeting the requirements of registration with the Human Tissue Authority.  They will chair regular QM meetings with senior medical and nursing; managing the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) within these teams, ensuring all quality and clinical incidents are discussed within the local governance frameworks to ensure quality assurance and improvement (QA&I).

Working hours 37.5 per week, Monday – Friday 9am – 5:30pm

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Achieving and maintaining JACIE Accreditation. JACIE accreditation requires specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
  • In addition, policies and procedures with the responsibility of other departments of London Bridge Hospital, The Harley Street Clinic or HCA Healthcare UK Corporate Office (for example: medical records, pharmacy, pathology, blood transfusion, patient transport, adverse incident reporting) must all conform to the requirements of the JACIE accreditation scheme.
  • Lead the teams in the areas of Quality Management, for example in the format of SOPs and design of monitoring arrangements
  • Set up the quality system to enable these SOP(s) to be written, agreed, implemented, monitored, and reviewed
  • Agree with the BMT Programme Directors and Clinical Leads how existing standards and policies and procedures will be reflected in the quality control system
  • Work with clinical staff in the Haematology departments to ensure that these SOPs are communicated, implemented, monitored, and reviewed
  • Prepare general SOP(s) to cover the working of the quality system (for example document control, review and approval of policies and SOPs, reporting arrangements for non-conformities)
  • Chair regular meetings of clinical and nursing, to review progress on these SOPs
  • Arrange and chair regular meetings with the external Stem Cell Laboratory, establish an agenda to meet HTA and JACIE requirements. Represent the BMT service at relevant external meetings
  • Provide formal reports to external agencies (National Blood Transfusion Service, Human Tissue Authority, etc)
  • Take part in the review of incidents reported by the clinical programme, assessing the implications of the incidents and ensuring corrective action reports are completed
  • Take an active role in the programme audit group, helping to formulate the annual audit plan and ensuring compliance with this
  • Develop and implement indicators to monitor aspects of the stem cell transplant process
  • Undertake validation studies on significant processes and/or equipment used in the stem cell programme, present findings and recommendations.

Skills & Experience

  • 4 years’ experience in management and/or quality management
  • Experienced in or knowledgeable of the concept of ‘Clinical Governance’
  • A proven track record in working for a complex organisation including experience in: change management, protocol/policy development and implementation
  • Previous experience in the NHS
  • IT competent in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, databases
  • Have worked/can work autonomously, able to chair senior meetings, and to lead on implementation of quality issues
  • Communication & Customer Care
  • Quality and service improvement skills
  • Ability to plan, organise and prioritise own work and the work of others
  • Information processing (IT skills)
  • Detailed knowledge of quality management systems
  • Familiar and competent with research methodology and clinical audit
  • Educated to a degree level or equivalent
  • Relevant post-graduate training in management or quality management
